In August 2022 former Nashville Mayor John Cooper announced a new city ordinance called the Multimodal Access Closure Policy making it illegal for construction activities to “affect” multimodal pathway travel for a period longer than seven days. In other words, under the new code, construction projects can no longer block sidewalks as they have been known to do. Prior to the law, project stakeholders could file for 30-day permits to obstruct public byways and permit renewals could continue indefinitely. One way to comply with the law is to erect public protection over sidewalks so that they are not obstructed.
