The Mobile Airport Authority (MAA) is clear to take flight with an all new $381 Million International Terminal at Brookley Field Mobile(BFM). The first phase of the terminal consists of a five-gate facility. It expands the existing 2-gate BFM Terminal and relocates the Mobile Regional Airport, located 25 miles west of Downtown, to BFM. MAA’s master plan includes an eventual 12-gate expansion of the new international terminal once fully developed as demand continues to grow. Leaders envision the expansion and relocation will make the downtown airport a domestic and international travel destination. The new BFM terminal is bordered by Perimeter Road and Michigan Avenue along Interstate 10 in Mobile Alabama.

The new terminal is designed in partnership between HOK, FSB Architects and Engineers, and MAA. Once completed, the new facility will have expanded amenities including an adjacent covered parking facility with access to car rental services, and additional concessions services.
“The new terminal will elevate the passenger experience at Mobile International and transform travel in the region,” said Peter Ruggiero, HOK’s lead designer on the project. “We’re thrilled to work with the Mobile Airport Authority and FSB to bring the project to life.”

Delta Airlines, United Airlines, and American Airlines currently provide service to Mobile from the Mobile Regional Airport, located 25 miles from downtown Mobile. The new terminal is situated five miles from Downtown and provides easier access for travelers. MAA President Chris Curry believes the easier access to the terminal will ultimately reduce the number of people from the Mobile Metropolitan Area that choose to travel to other airports for air service due to cost and convenience. Here’s the quick rundown:

Plans show a new loop road that leads to an elevated roadway to the terminal for passenger pick-up and drop off. The new terminal will welcome passengers with a dramatic canopy extending from the terminal roof to protect them from the elements. Native landscaping surrounds the site, which includes a new five-story parking garage. Back-of-house functions and airport offices sit one level below the passenger concourse.

The new terminal layout places arrivals and departures on the same elevated level. Inside, ticketing check-in and baggage claim will flank the new central security checkpoint. The terminal will feature special floor-to-ceiling walls that will anchor the security checkpoint and act as wayfinding beacons. The perimeter of the terminal is wrapped in walls of glass that will fill the space with natural light. Renderings also indicate specialty ceilings with integrated lighting.

The flexible design provides room for the airport to expand to 12 gates. Construction of the 5-gate terminal will begin in 2024 and is scheduled for completion in 2025.
