Portman announced that Retrograde Coffee, a popular go-to neighborhood coffee shop, is now open at Starling, the 359-unit multifamily building in Germantown. Overlooking First Horizon Park, the new location officially opened its doors on Thursday this week to become the first café along the Cumberland River Greenway. Brokered by OJAS, the cafe is located at 820 4th Avenue N.

“The opening of our third location marks an exciting milestone in our mission to bring thoughtfully crafted coffee to underserved areas of Nashville,” said Nathan Weinberg, owner and co-founder of Retrograde Coffee. “Starling’s location along the Cumberland River Greenway offers a dynamic new connection to the Germantown community and increases our ability to engage with both locals and visitors on foot.”

Retrograde Coffee, celebrated for its locally roasted brews, artisan pastries and house-made sourdough bagels and sandwiches, will open in a space that connects directly to Starling’s lobby. The thoughtfully designed café will offer comfortable lounge seating in a welcoming, communal setting for both residents and the public.
One of Starling’s most notable amenities is its 17,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. In addition to Retrograde Coffee, Toastique, a gourmet toast and juice bar, and Solidcore, a strength training fitness concept, are open. SweatHouz, a luxury boutique wellness brand, Social Cantina, a modern Mexican restaurant and tequila bar, KyuRamen, a popular Japanese ramen shop, PennePazze, a farm-to-table Italian eatery and GelatoPazzo, an Italian ice cream concept, will open in the coming months.

“Welcoming Retrograde Coffee’s third location to Starling brings a beloved local brand to an area of Nashville that’s been missing a neighborhood coffee shop to call its own,” said Dotan Zuckerman, Head of Retail Development at Portman. “This latest opening not only enhances the daily experience for our residents, but also invites the broader community to engage with and enjoy the revitalized greenway.”
Retrograde Coffee will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with extended hours during events at First Horizon Park. This weekend, Retrograde Coffee and other local retailers will host a “Grand Slam Giveaway,” offering one entry for every $5 spent. One winner will receive more than $1,000 in gift cards from neighboring businesses.
