Essex Development announced its newest commercial development project, “The Hill Marketplace & Community Arts Center,(The Hill)” which is coming to Nashville’s new South Bank District later this Spring. The project will serve as a platform to which the art and culinary worlds collide. The vacant 27,000-square-foot former souvenirs warehouse will be repurposed to host a number of community based programs. The programing will be used for proof of concept in future developments. The property is located at 34 Rutledge Street.
The developer adds that art and culture are in full focus throughout the space, as the walls of the space feature a gallery of over a dozen original murals painted by local artists, including several installations by talented local muralist, Eric “Mobe” Bass. The space will be divided into a mix of uses which include will feature a boutique farmer’s market, retail marketplace, as well as a live performance stage.


The Hill will also house several food trucks inside the space by widening the the entrance of the former loading dock. Other planned uses include the addition of a coffee house and cocktail bar. It will also incorporate both podcast and music studios which is expected to serve as an incubator for up-and-coming artists.
In support of the nearby non-profit organization, Nashville Children’s Theatre, Essex Development has donated some of the space to help potentially expand its course offering and host select live shows. The local development firm’s managing partner, Matt Williams, “Envisions the venue as a place for the community to gather and as an opportunity to support local artists and businesses”.
