Dowdle Construction Group announced today that construction is complete on Spread Market & Larder, a neighborhood market with a selection of grocery items, homemade bread, daily sandwiches, grab-and-go snacks, beer, and cider. Designed by Smith Gee Studio, the market is in a 1920s-era home in Germantown that was converted into a retail space. The market is located at 1330 5th Avenue North.

“During the renovation process, Dowdle Construction took great care to help us maintain as much of the inherent charm of the house as possible,” said Chad Kelly, owner of Spread Market & Larder. “Germantown is an incredibly special neighborhood, and it is important to build on the legacy that many before us have worked hard to create. The space is beautiful, and we cannot wait for the community to come see us.”

The renovation included a 366-square-foot addition for a total of 1,988 square feet of space. The exterior facade was updated with a fresh coat of paint, but otherwise left as is.

Inside, the house’s original floors and bead boards were left intact, and the original door frames and moldings were reused throughout the space. Locally made tables and shelving display pre-packaged goods including artisan olive oil, tinned fish, and spices sourced from around the world.

“Converting an older home into a commercial space presents challenges, especially when updating for current building standards while maintaining the historical aspects of the house,” said Glynn Dowdle, Principal at Dowdle Construction Group. “The tenants took great care to preserve the house while converting it into a space where all its neighbors are welcome. This is a nice addition to the popular and ever-growing neighborhood, and it will provide Germantown with a unique stop for specialty food items.”

Dowdle has become known for its adaptive reuse projects such as L&L Market, SiloStudios, Adele’s and the fire station near Hillsboro Village on 21st Avenue South. Spread Market is open Thursday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
